Star Wars: The Old Republic is another game that’s very high on my list of games to look forward to. This weekend the BioWare doctors announced the release date as December 20th. This is honestly kind of odd to me.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Smuggler Progression Trailer

The Smuggler character progression trailer for The Old Republic was released this week.

I’m honestly not a huge fan of the armor with the capes. The other stuff looks great, and Star Wars-y but the capes seem rather out of place. Also the wide brimmed hat. With the cape (or coat tail, or whatever it is) and the almost sombrero, it makes the character look like it should be in Fallout, not Star Wars. But I do sympathize with the artists. On the Republic side, Smugglers are probably the hardest to develop art for. Jedi are Jedi, and Troopers are military. Those are nice easy themes, while Smuggler is sort of on its own. On the Empire side, Sith are Sith, slightly harder to do work for than Jedi, but still fairly easy. Bounty Hunters are also sort of easy, and also more varied in all their incarnations throughout Star Wars canon, making them easier to do the art for. I don’t think Imperial Agents are as hard as Smugglers, but they’re not terribly easy either.

What do you all think?

In awesome news from Massively, we’ve learned that Star Trek Online is going to a free to play model by the end of 2011. I absolutely love this. This has turned me into pretty much a lifetime customer for them. While I will be playing TOR mainly when it comes out, STO is always going to be a great distraction. A nice palette cleanser, if you will. Something nice and different. If I have to pay a subscription fee, I wouldn’t go to STO. Without it, why not put some super casual hours in?
